Effects of Red Cell Spacing and Red Cell Movement Upon Oxygen Release Under Conditions of Maximally Working Skeletal Muscle

1989

The impacts of the particulate nature of blood upon capillary O 2 release have been studied extensively by Federspiel and Sarelius [8] and by Federspiel and Popel [9]. The latter authors found that the O 2 flux out of a capillary decreases rapidly as intracapillary red blood cell spacing increases. The O 2 flux out of a single RBC, however, is enhanced as long as the inter-erythrocytic plasma gap does not exceed the “zone-of-influence” of a single RBC, which they determined to be about 1 capillary diameter. In their model, they considered spherical red cells contained in a cylindrical tube filled with plasma, on the lateral surface of which a boundary Po 2 was specified. Based on earlier st…

Springback effect evaluation in three-dimensional stamping processes at the varying of blankholder force

2006

The quantitative evaluation of elastic springback in sheet metal stamping processes is still today a very interesting research topic, since this phenomenon causes a manufacturing shape defect. A measurement technique based on the shadow moiré method, already developed by the present authors, has been further upgraded and applied to evaluate the springback phenomenon in the deep drawing of square boxes, the basic three-dimensional stamping process. In particular this technique is able to determine the final lateral surface of the drawn parts, once extracted from the dies, and to compare such surface with the ideal one derived from the die's computer-aided design (CAD) geometry. Proper quant…

Analysis of stress concentration during tension of round pultruded composite rods

2008

The stress state in a solid round transversely isotropic rod loaded with balanced shear stresses on a part of its lateral surface is considered. The change in gripping conditions is simulated by varying the distribution of statically equivalent shear stresses. The solution for the stress state was obtained using exact equations of linear theory of elasticity of anisotropic body. An analysis of the distribution of longitudinal and hoop stresses showed that at the grip edges a very high stress concentration is possible, which depends on the radius of the tensioned rod and the distribution of shear stresses on the gripped surface. At the grip edges, the longitudinal and hoop stresses tend to i…

A Maximizing Hydraulic Radius (MHR) method for defining cross-section limits in rills and ephemeral gullies

2021

Abstract In this paper, a new method for determining the cross-section limits in rills and ephemeral gullies is proposed. This method is based on the estimate of the actual depth ha of each cross-section, which is the particular depth distinguishing the channel from the hillslope areas. The analysis showed that the actual depth corresponds to a particular bank slope sta occurring for the maximum value of the hydraulic radius R. The method was applied using a volumetric approach for calculating the hydraulic radius as the ratio between the volume of the whole investigated channel and its boundary lateral surface. The value of the bank slope st was derived by the DEM of the whole channel late…
